It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Forensic Sciences. We are grateful you took time to visit our web page. We hope that you will enjoy learning about the department. The department offers academic programmes that seek to train experts in the area of forensics to fill the human resource gap. Forensic services in the country and the west African sub-region are beset with several challenges including lack of adequately trained forensic scientists. Institutions such as the police and judiciary services which use forensic techniques to support criminal and anthropological investigations are, thus, handicapped in carrying out their core functions. This is where we step in to provide the needed human resource. We also collaborate with industry to provide continuous professional education to build their capacity to improve productivity. We collaborate with local and foreign institutions to teaching and research. We look forward to welcoming you into our department as student or scholar.

The Department of Forensic Sciences began as a programme under the erstwhile Department of Biomedical and Forensic Sciences. The department received accreditation to run the forensic science programme in 2014. In August 2015, the Biomedical Science programmes in the Department were migrated to join the School of Allied Health Sciences in the College of Health and Allied Sciences, leaving the Forensic Science programmes with the School of Biological Sciences.

We recognize that the number of forensic scientists in Ghana is woefully inadequate considering the current population and the pace of development.  Also as crime becomes increasingly sophisticated, the demand grows for highly skilled forensic scientists capable of innovating, performing and analyzing scientific procedures to investigate, maintain and improve crime prevention and detection.

In line with this philosophy, we believe in the need to:

  • turn out more students for professional careers related to crime prevention and detection;
  • provide students with critical thinking and technology skills necessary for lifelong success;
  • produce confident, competent and ethically-minded future forensic scientists;
  • advance the various fields through innovative research to solve pertinent problems that confront the country;
  • impart knowledge, skills and intellectual leadership in the public and private sector.

Goals and Objectives
Our goal is to produce graduates dedicated to pursuing career as scientists in research and justice systems.

The objectives of the Department are to:

  • train students to become innovative and provide exemplary leadership;
  • train students to conduct research and contribute to knowledge in the field of forensic sciences;
  • produce competent graduates to pursue further studies in field of forensic sciences;

To have a Department that serves as a pivot for the training of Forensic Scientists with world-wide acclaim.
